10 Interesting Facts About the 2018 FIFA World Cup
  1. This is the second World Cup to use goal-line technology. The first was Brazil 2014.
  2. To this point in history, only teams from Europe and South America have won the World Cup.
  3. As of 2018, the United States is the only North American team to ever take third place in a World Cup. They achieved this in 1930.
  4. As of 2018, the only Asian team to ever place in the top four is South Korea. They placed fourth in 2002.
  5. The official ball will be provided by adidas.
  6. This is the first time Russia will host the World Cup.
  7. This is the first time a country that stretches from Europe and Asia will host.
  8. Despite not winning a World Cup in soccer, Russia—including its past with the former Soviet Union—has contributed a great deal to the world of hockey, basketball, traditional Olympic sports, and, the “less athletic world,” but a competitive one nonetheless, of chess, particularly from 1948 on, in the World Chess Championship.
  9. The Russian stadiums are located in the western half of the huge country.
  10. Moscow, the capitol of Russia, will provide two stadiums.
